Fixing a Hole

What would the Beatles sound like if they were here today? In the sixties they shocked the world with their first album. The Beatles sound and sophistication grew exponentially and they continued to shock a generation with each new album. The Fab Four became the engineers of a cultural and musical revolution. Continually moving into new territory, they created the constructs and a composition that would become the essential foundation for all popular music to follow into the present day.

Recently, Bono of U2, while accepting a Grammy award, said that they are only playing in the country that the Beatles discovered. Others, to include classical music conductor Leonard Bernstein, have rightly referred to the Beatles as the Forth B of Music.

So what if the Beatles continued to evolve. What would they sound like today? We can be sure that it would be something unexpected and something ground breaking. I think you will discover the answer in the latest release from “The Fireman.” This band has created a sound that echos the Beatles with layers of evolution added for good measure. Here is a song from their album, Electric Arguments, called The Travelling Light:

Yes, The Fireman is Paul McCartney. That’s him playing bass and singing all of the vocals. Of course, he wrote every song on Electric Arguments and naturally he plays every instrument. This is another brilliant landmark and about as close to The Beatles today as one can imagine. Many of the other tracks are more experimental with a few great pop moments mixed in. I highly recommend you give this work of art a spin.

IZ Lives

As a child we dream big. Our senses are enlivened with joy when we discover new things to touch and see. Our dreams are always there reminding us of something much more…something magical beyond the stars in the night sky. In time, the dreams slowly fade away. Is this all there is? Is there nothing more? We search for inspiration and perhaps once in a blue moon, we find something, or someone giving off a spark:

Israel Kamakawiwo’ole (IZ) was such a person. He left us at the young age of 38 in 1997. Yet he left behind a rare artistic vision to inspire us to dream again. His art was his voice and his unique style of Hawaiian folk and jazz. Sometimes IZ would take a simple pop tune, work it with his vocal and ukulele magic, and transform the arrangement into an unforgettable moment.

IZ Lives! Watch and Listen closely and you just might perceive the spark of his amazing dream:

Call it jazz, experimental blues, or some other hybrid musical category. Or call it a subterranean sound that echoes through the hollows of a vacant soul. John Martyn’s arrangement masterfully captures familiar, yet distant elements imprinted on some forgotten region of the human genetic blueprint.

NEW list with videos for almost each item on the list. I completely do not agree with the top 10, but it is the top 100 singles and still fun to look through the list. Do you agree with the list?

GNR FINALLY to release new album.

Amazing. Finally we will get a new album from Guns N’ Roses. After 14 years it better be great and worthy of the madness Axl has put all his fans through waiting and waiting while he redid the album over and over again.

How do the lyrics go? “It’s been 14 years of silence.” So sang Axl Rose in 1991 on “Fourteen Years.” But who would have guessed he was predicting the future?

OK, so that’s not exactly true, as a string of stop-and-start tours, song leaks and Internet rumors have surrounded Guns N’ Roses for much of the past decade and a half. But an album that was supposedly 14 years in the making, “Chinese Democracy,” will finally be released on Nov. 23, 2008.
